Human Override

Giving people a clear, timely way to stop, change or reverse an automated action.

What is Human Override?

Giving people a clear, timely way to stop, change or reverse an automated action.

What you learn

People must be able to stop automation before it’s too late.

When it helps

a person must pause, stop or reverse a specific automated action before it causes harm.

Use it at work

  1. Find the automated actions that can cause harm.
  2. Give people enough time and information to step in.
  3. Make stopping fast and obvious.
  4. Let people reverse the action afterward.

Your output

For each automated action, check: can the right person see it coming, understand it and stop it in time? If not, add a pause or a hold.

Watch for

An override that arrives too late, or is too hard to use.
