Robot Handoffs

What is Robot Handoffs?

Coordinating how an object passes between a person and a robot, so neither side drops it.

What you learn

In a handoff, both sides must know who is holding it.

When it helps

a robot and a person pass an object, and it’s unclear who’s holding it.

Use it at work

  1. Signal when the robot is ready to hand over.
  2. Hold the object steady at a height people can reach.
  3. Let go only when the person is taking the weight.
  4. Confirm the handoff with a sound or light.

Your output

For any handoff in your product, whether of objects, tasks or data, define the signal that the other side has taken over.

Watch for

Letting go before the other side has a firm hold.
