Accessible Naming

Giving every control a name that says what it does and matches what people see.

What is Accessible Naming?

Giving every control a name that says what it does and matches what people see.

What you learn

Every control needs a name that says what it does.

When it helps

a screen reader announces just “button” or “link”, or voice commands don’t match labels.

Use it at work

  1. Give every control a name that says what it does.
  2. Make the name match the visible label.
  3. Name icon buttons, like “Close” or “Search”.
  4. Check the names with a screen reader.

Your output

Run a screen reader over one screen. Rename any control announced only as “button”, “link” or “image”.

Watch for

Unlabeled icon buttons and vague names like “button” or “click here”.
