What is Survey Design?

Writing survey questions that measure what you intend, and reading answers within the sample’s limits.

What you learn

The wording of a question can create its answer.

When it helps

you need answers from many people, and the wording could sway them.

Use it at work

  1. Write the decision the survey informs.
  2. Ask one thing per question.
  3. Offer balanced answers in both directions.
  4. Test the survey on five people before sending it.

Your output

Read each survey question aloud and ask: does it suggest an answer, or ask two things at once? Fix any that do.

Watch for

Writing leading, loaded or double questions.
