Measurement

Choosing what to count so you can see whether things are getting better for people.

What is Measurement?

Choosing what to count so you can see whether things are getting better for people.

What you learn

Choose measures that are hard to improve unless people are better off, and pair each with a check.

When it helps

the team reports numbers, but nobody knows whether people are better off.

Use it at work

  1. Write the change for people that you want.
  2. List measures that could show it.
  3. For each, ask: could it rise while things get worse?
  4. Pair each useful measure with a check that exposes harm or gaming.

Your output

For each number your team reports, ask: could this go up while things get worse for people? Pair it with a check that would reveal that.

Watch for

Measuring activity, such as clicks, messages or time spent.
