Developmental Feedback

What is Developmental Feedback?

Feedback that describes a specific behavior and its effect, so the person can improve it.

What you learn

Name what you saw and its effect, not the intent you assume.

When it helps

feedback is vague, or a behavior is hurting the work or the team.

Use it at work

  1. Describe what you saw or heard, specifically.
  2. Describe its effect on the work or on others.
  3. Ask for their view, and listen.
  4. Agree on what they’ll try next time.

Your output

Write your next piece of feedback in this form: “When you [what I saw], [the effect].” Remove any guess about intent.

Watch for

Vague praise or criticism, or guessing at someone’s motives.
