What is Data Provenance?

Recording where data came from and how it was changed, so others can trace and check it.

What you learn

Every number should trace back to where it came from.

When it helps

nobody can tell where a number came from, or whether its source has changed.

Use it at work

  1. Record the source and date of every number.
  2. Note each change: filters, calculations and copies.
  3. Link reports back to their sources.
  4. Flag conclusions when a source is updated.

Your output

For each number in your next presentation, add its source and date. Trace one number all the way back.

Watch for

Numbers on slides with no source or date.
