Content Audit

Reviewing all existing content to decide what to keep, fix, merge or remove.

What is Content Audit?

Reviewing all existing content to decide what to keep, fix, merge or remove.

What you learn

Keep content only if someone needs it and someone owns it.

When it helps

content is duplicated, out of date or unowned, or a redesign needs a starting inventory.

Use it at work

  1. List every page or item.
  2. For each, note who needs it, for what, and who owns it.
  3. Decide: keep, fix, merge or remove.
  4. Give every remaining item an owner and a review date.

Your output

For each page in one section, write who needs it, for what, and who owns it. Remove pages with no reader, and assign owners to the rest.

Watch for

Keeping everything, or deleting by page views alone.
