Capacity Planning

Comparing commitments with the time and skills a team actually has.

What is Capacity Planning?

Comparing commitments with the time and skills a team actually has.

What you learn

Before saying yes, decide what moves to make room.

When it helps

new work arrives after people and dates are already committed, and you need to show what accepting it would displace.

Use it at work

  1. List current commitments, with the time each one needs.
  2. Compare that with the people and weeks available.
  3. For each new request, show what would have to move.
  4. Let the person who asked choose the trade-off.

Your output

Before you accept your next request, list what’s already committed. Write what would move, and share it with whoever asked.

Watch for

Saying yes to new work without moving anything, so everything slips.
