Accessible Authentication

Designing sign-in and account recovery that don’t depend on memory, copying or puzzles.

What is Accessible Authentication?

Designing sign-in and account recovery that don’t depend on memory, copying or puzzles.

What you learn

Don’t make signing in a memory or copying test.

When it helps

people get locked out, can’t paste a code, or face a puzzle to sign in.

Use it at work

  1. Allow pasting and password managers.
  2. Offer ways in that need no memory, like passkeys or email links.
  3. Give codes enough time, and let people resend them.
  4. Avoid puzzles. Use checks that don’t test memory or skill.

Your output

Sign in to your product with a password manager and a pasted code. Remove anything that blocks pasting or forces retyping.

Watch for

Blocking paste, forcing people to retype codes, or adding puzzles.
