Screen Reader Evaluation

Using a screen reader to check whether people can complete a whole task by listening.

What is Screen Reader Evaluation?

Using a screen reader to check whether people can complete a whole task by listening.

What you learn

Automated checks can pass while the task still fails. Listen to it.

When it helps

automated checks pass, but people who use screen readers still get stuck.

Use it at work

  1. Turn on a screen reader, and don’t look at the screen.
  2. Do your main task from start to finish.
  3. Note anything unclear, missing or not announced.
  4. Fix the blockers, then repeat with each release.

Your output

Once per release, complete your main task with a screen reader alone, start to finish. Note every point where you’re stuck or unsure.

Watch for

Relying on automated accessibility checks alone.
