Informed Consent

Making sure people understand what taking part involves, and can freely say no, now or later.

What is Informed Consent?

Making sure people understand what taking part involves, and can freely say no, now or later.

What you learn

Consent counts only if people understand it and can easily say no.

When it helps

research records people, collects personal stories, or involves people who may feel they can’t refuse.

Use it at work

  1. Explain in plain words what you’ll record, why and who sees it.
  2. Make saying no as easy as saying yes.
  3. Check understanding by asking them to explain it back.
  4. Remind them they can stop or withdraw at any time.

Your output

Before your next session, ask a colleague to read your consent wording and explain it back. If they can’t, rewrite it.

Watch for

Treating a signed form as consent.
