Card Sorting

Asking people to group and name topics, to learn how they think about them.

What is Card Sorting?

Asking people to group and name topics, to learn how they think about them.

What you learn

Let people group and name things before you design the menu.

When it helps

your categories follow internal teams, and you don’t know how people group things.

Use it at work

  1. Write each topic on its own card.
  2. Ask about 15 people to group the cards and name each group.
  3. Look for the groups and names most people share.
  4. Use their names in your categories.

Your output

Before you set a menu, run a quick card sort with about 15 people. Use the groups and names most of them make.

Watch for

Inventing categories and names inside the team.
